SANFORD, Maine – The Sanford High School Theater Club will be performing “Mamma Mia” for its spring musical and is holding auditions on Dec. 13.
Students who want help preparing for the audition can stay after school on Friday, Dec. 3 to receive training from former SHS theater standout, Dylan Cao ’20.
According to Wikipedia, “Mamma Mia!” is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson and based on the songs of ABBA, a Swedish pop group formed in the 1970s. Some of ABBA’s most well-known songs include “Dancing Queen”, “Super Trouper” and “Mamma Mia”.
The musical is about a mother, Donna, who is planning her daughter’s wedding. However, her daughter, Sophie, has a secret plan. Out of curiosity for who should walk her down the aisle, she has invited three men from her mother’s previous relationships in hopes to discover which one of them is her father.
Science Teacher Kristie Baker and Sanford Performing Arts Center Director Brett Williams are the advisors of the SHS Theater Club. When it came to choosing this year’s musical, Baker and Williams listened to students talking about what shows they were excited to do, then made a collective decision with Jane Kirton, SHS’s Chorus Teacher and the show’s Music Director.
Baker speculates the main challenges will be the costumes, given the main characters have at least nine different costumes.
For students interested in getting involved, the SHS Theater Club highly encourages it. Baker reminds the student body that even if you are not interested in singing, dancing or acting, there are behind-the-scenes opportunities including set and costume design, stage production and more.
Students with questions and/or interest can email Mrs. Baker or Mr. Williams for further information.
