Sanford High School’s wrestling team won Dual State Championships Feb. 22 at Fryeburg Academy.
The Spartans worked to defeat Camden Hills then Noble and finally defeated Kennebunk in the finals, with a score of 58-21.
One of the captains of the wrestling team, junior James Blood, has also qualified for the New England Championships to be held on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5 in Providence, R.I.
According to Nate Smith, SHS wrestling coach, the Spartans had three freshmen place at the State Championships meet: James Chaplick, Luke Callis and Canton Hill.
“[They] were all in extremely tough senior-laden weight classes and will most likely dominate their fields next year,” said Smith.
Although Smith said they haven’t done anything differently this year to lead to their success, he said that the wrestlers as a team have worked together for their team’s successes.

The team also competed in the Individual State Championships on Feb. 19 in which they were Runners Up. The Spartans had seven wrestlers place in the Individual State Meet: junior James Blood (Finalist), sophomore Mason Van Gieson (3rd in 113 weight class), freshman James Chaplick (3rd, 120 weight class), freshman Luke Callis (4th, 138 weight class), senior Jack Callis (3rd, 170 weight class), freshman Canton Hill (4th, 195 weight class), and senior Korbin Roberston (3rd, 285 weight class).
