Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: May 23-28

Last week’s varsity game recaps for Baseball, Lacrosse, and Track & Field

Baseball

Last week, Baseball had three games on the road, traveling to Massabesic, Noble and Falmouth. The Spartans defeated Massabesic on Tuesday, May 24, 7-4. Ben Gill is credited with the win. He pitched 5 innings, recording 3H, 3R, 2ER, 5BB, and 6K. Notable performances include TJ Curley, who went 3-5, 1R, 1RBI, 1SB; Tanner McCann went 2-3, 1SB; Parker Knapp, who went 2-3, 1R; and Alex Sevigny, who went 2-3, 1R, 1RBI.

The Spartans went on to defeat Noble 8-5 on Thursday, May 26. Justin Gould takes the win with 5IP, 7H, 4R, 3ER, 0BB, and 6K. Gill went 2-4, 2R, 1SB; McCann went 3-4, 1R, 2RBI; and Scott Long went 2-3, 1BB.

On May 28, the squad lost their away conference game against Falmouth 8-2.

Next week, Baseball hosts South Portland on Monday, May 30 and Marshwood on Tuesday, May 31 at Goodall Park.

Boys Lacrosse

The Boys Lacrosse hosted Massabesic for Senior Recognition on Monday, May 23, dominating 18-4. Jackson Lyles led the pack with six goals, followed by Ayden Lockard and Parker Pease with five apiece. Tylor Pitman and AJ Anderson also tallied one each.

Matt Cote made an incredible 18 saves in the game.

“It was a great win for our seniors on their senior night,” said Coach Nate McLellan.

They traveled to Cheverus on Friday, May 27 and lost in a close game, falling 8-7.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse hosted Deering on Wednesday, May 25 for Senior Recognition Night and won 14-6. Emerson Tolpin led the Spartans with seven goals, one assist, and three draw controls. Daylin Soule notched three goals; Kaylynne Hessler had two goals, an assist, five draw controls and six ground balls. Cayla Gwilt and Mckenna Nanartowich each tallied a goal. Nanartowich and Elaina Hanselmann also added one assist each.

The Spartans play their final game of the regular season on the road at Westbrook on Tuesday, May 31.

Boys Track & Field

Last week, Sanford Track & Field traveled to Falmouth on Friday, May 27 for the Varsity Outdoor Southwestern Track & Field Championships. On the men’s side, Mason Van Gieson scored third in the pole vault. Landon Gosling and Preston Brown placed seventh and ninth in the event, respectively. Tucker Walker placed third in the discus and ninth in shotput. Nick Farrington placed fourth in the javelin. Isaac Colon placed tenth in the 1600m racewalk.

Honorable mentions also include Jake Doughty, who placed tenth in the high jump and twelfth in the triple jump, Tyler LeBeuf‘s thirteenth place finish in the 300m hurdles, Josh Werner and Greggory Waterman‘s twelfth and thirteenth places in the 800m respectively, and Adrian Zea, who scored thirteenth and fourteenth in the 200m and 100m, respectively, and the 4x800m relay that scored seventh (John-Paul Alexandre, Waterman, Cameron Mathieu, Werner).

The Track & Field Maine State Championship will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Bangor High School.

Girls Track & Field

Last week, Sanford Track & Field traveled to Falmouth on Friday, May 27 for the Varsity Outdoor Southwestern Track & Field Championships. On the women’s side, Taylor Tovey continues to be a force for the Spartans, placing third in the high jump, fifth in the triple jump, ninth in the 200m and twelfth in the pole vault. Jaylyn Bartolome placed second in the pole vault and Amy Williams placed seventh. Kora Eckelman placed sixth in the discus and shot put. Arianna Hebert placed third in the 1600m racewalk, Misty Adams placed tenth in the 1600m and Samone Gallagher placed eleventh in the 800m, and the 4×800 team placed seventh (Gallagher, Addie Fiandaca, Adams, Celia Perks).

The Track & Field Maine State Championship will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Bangor High School.
