The Sanford High School Band played at the city’s Veterans Day service at the Veterans Memorial Gymnasium this past Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

The guest speaker for the service was Vice-Admiral George Emery, U.S. Navy (Retired), SHS Class of 1959. He served 33 years on active duty in the Navy and retired as the Commander Submarine Force United States Atlantic Fleet and the Commander Submarine Allied Command Atlantic.

Admiral Emery stated he and his wife have a special fondness for the Memorial Gym because that is where they first met in the 1950s.

After Admiral Emery’s speech, the SHS band played the Armed Forces Melody, with veterans from every branch standing as their branch’s song was played. This was followed by a wreath laying, rifle salute and the playing of taps by Army veteran Jessica Johnson of Biddeford, who devotes much of her time playing taps around the state.
