Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: Jan. 17-21

Snowfall postpones many contests; Results for Boys and Girls Basketball and Indoor Track

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team traveled to Massabesic on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and came out victorious with a 62-27 win. Coach Mills considered the game a team win with everyone contributing to the success.

Due to a snow day on Jan. 20, the team hosted Kennebunk the following day on Jan. 21, earning their second win of the week with a score of 62-57. The Spartans trailed 32-25 at halftime and 48-44 going into the fourth quarter. Brady Adams led a fourth-quarter comeback with three 3-pointers (12 total points for the game), while Makai Bougie scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half. Tanner McCann added 11 points for the Spartans.

The 5-7 Spartans host two home games this week, first Gorham on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Noble on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

The Spartans hosted Scarborough on Wednesday, Jan. 18, falling 53-38. Julissa McBarron led the team with 11 points. Sadie Sevigny and Ava Hudson added 8 a piece and Shelby McLeod tacked on 7.

The team bounced back in their away game against Kennebunk (pushed back to Jan. 21 due to snow), finishing with a 52-40 victory. Riley Hebler led the way with 20 points, making 11 free throws in the fourth quarter. McBarron chipped in with 10.

The 8-4 Spartans are on the road this week, traveling to Gorham on Thursday, Jan. 26 and Noble on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

Unified Basketball

The Unified Basketball team will play at home on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. against York. Wear red and show your Spartan Pride!

Cheerleading

The winter cheerleading team will host an SMAA Cheer Competition at home on Saturday, Jan. 28. Doors open at 10:00 and the competition begins at 11 a.m. Our Spartans will take the mat just after 12 p.m.

Indoor Track

The Spartans competed at USM on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Kennebunk, Marshwood, Massabesic, and Noble.

In the open-field events, Landon Gosling and Zachary Michienzi took first and second in the pole vault, respectively.

In the Junior Boys Division, Logan Glidden placed second in the long jump and fourth in both the 55m and 200m.

In the Senior Boys Division, Michael Cousineau took first in the 55m hurdles, second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Carter Buswell took second in the high jump, third in the 55m and fourth in the 200m. Tucker Walker continues to lead the pack in the shot put, taking first.

On the girls side, Sophie Therrien took second in the Junior 55m hurdles and triple jump.

Swim

The Sanford/Massabesic swim meet at Cape Elizabeth High School originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 20 was postponed to Monday, Jan. 30. This week’s meet at Greely High School is rescheduled to Saturday, Jan. 28.

Wrestling

The meet on Jan. 16 at Massabesic was canceled due to weather. The home meet on Wednesday, Jan. 25 is also canceled due to weather.
