Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: Jan. 23-28

Cheerleading scored second at SMAAs; will host Regionals Saturday, Feb. 4

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team hosted top-seeded Gorham on Thursday, Jan. 26, falling 69-55. They then hosted Noble on Saturday, Jan. 28, falling 69-60. Liam Gendron led the way in scoring with 17 points.

They travel to Scarbrough on Tuesday, Jan. 31 for a varsity doubleheader (girls at 5:30 and boys at 7), and host Bonny Eagle on Friday, Feb. 3.

Girls Basketball

The Spartans found success on the road this week, first at Gorham on Thursday, Jan. 26 and Noble on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Spartans defeated the Rams 52-41. Julissa McBarron led with 22 points and Riley Hebler added 11. Hailey Tarbox and Sadie Sevigny both tacked on 7 apiece.

At the end of the week, they dominated Noble 59-31. McBarron again led the way with 17 points, Hebler adding 12, and Addie Fandiaca adding 7 of her own.

They travel to Scarborough on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 (followed by the boys at 7) and play at Bonny Eagle on Friday, Feb. 3.

Unified Basketball

The Unified Basketball team played in their home opener against York on Wednesday, Jan. 26 for an exciting 72-70 game!

They travel to Noble on Tuesday, Jan. 31 for another fun day of basketball.

Cheerleading

The Spartans hosted the SMAA Cheer Competition at home on Saturday, Jan. 28 for an exciting kick-off to the competition season and placed second.

They’ll be hosting Regionals again in the Partners Bank Gymnasium this Saturday, Feb. 4. Come support your Spartans!

Indoor Track

The Spartans will compete at the SMAA Southwesterns Championships at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Swim

The Sanford/Massabesic swim team traveled to Greely High School on Saturday, Jan. 28. Abbey Gifford took third in the 500 Yard Freestyle, fifth in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle, swam on the first-place 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team and was the final leg of the first-place 200 Yard Medley Relay team. Hadley Legere took fourth in the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly

The meet at Cape Elizabeth High School originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 20 was postponed to Monday, Jan. 30.

Seniors will celebrate their swim careers this Friday, Feb. 3 at the Sanford/Springvale YMCA at 6pm against Gorham, Deering and Portland.

Wrestling

The home meet on Wednesday, Jan. 25 was canceled due to the weather. They travel to Cony High School for Varsity Duals on Saturday, Feb. 4.
