Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: May 8-13

Recaps continue for May varsity contests

Baseball

The Spartans fell to Cheverus in a tough 4-3 loss on Tuesday, May 9. Alex Sevigny had one hit and two RBI.

The team then traveled to Gorham on Thursday, May 11 and fell to the fams 10-4. Ben Gill had two hits for the Spartans.

The team bounced back on Saturday, May 13, defeating Portland 9-4 at Hadlock Field. Ben Gill allowed only two hits through six innings. The Spartans scored seven runs in the first two innings and stole five bases during a four-run first inning. Caden Fontaine led the team with three hits, and Tyler Sevigny, Beckett Barlow and Cayden Gendron all had two hits each.

They host three games this week at Goodall Park: Massabesic on Tuesday, May 16, Bonny Eagle on Thursday, May 18, and Falmouth on Saturday, May 20.

Boys Lacrosse

The Noble/Sanford co-op traveled to Cheverus on Tuesday, May 9 and defeated the Stags 11-4. Ayden Lockard tallied 4 goals and two assists, AJ Anderson tacked on 2 assists and 3 ground balls, and Tylor Pitman added 2 ground balls.

They traveled to Morse/Boothbay on Wednesdsay, May 15, earning a decisive 14-2 victory. Lockard recorded 6 goals 5 ground balls.

They host three teams this week: Wells on Monday, May 15, Massabseic on Wednesday, May 17 and Biddeford on Saturday, May 20.

Girls Lacrosse

The Spartans traveled to Noble on Monday, May 8, seeing the Knights for the second time this season. The team swept Noble during the regular season with Monday’s 11-5. Emerson Tolpin scored five goals, and Violet Quinn and Kay Hessler each added two goals and an assist for the Spartans.

The team fell to Cheverus on Wednesday, May 10, 14-4. Hessler, Ali Long, Sadie Sevigny and Tolpin scored for Sanford. Payton Kimball had eight saves.

After a long week of contests, the Spartans then fell to Thornton Academy 11-3 on Saturday, May 13. McKenna Nanartowich scored two goals Sevigny had one.

The Spartans host Traip Academy on Monday, May 15 at 4 p.m. for their senior Recognition game.

Softball

The Kennebunk/Sanford Co-op continued their win impressive streak, earning a 5-2 victory against South Portland/Westbrook on Monday, May 8. Madison Sheppard had an RBI double.

They then defeated Portland 13-0 in five innings on Wednesday, May 10. Hannah Mueller had a double, a home run and three RBI.

They finished the week defeating Massabesic 4-1 on Friday, May 12.

Up next, they play a busy four-game week, hosting Biddeford on Monday, May 15, traveling to Falmouth on Wednesday, May 17, hosting Cheverus on Friday, May 19, and traveling to Thornton Academy on Saturday, May 20.

Boys Tennis

The Spartans fell to Portland 5-0 on Monday, May 8, and took another tough 5-0 loss to Thornton Academy on Thursday, May 11.

They travel to South Portland on Tuesday, May 16 and host Windham on Thursday, May 18.

Girls Tennis

Girls Tennis defeated Massabseic 5-0 on Tuesday, May 9. Olivia Guinard (6-0, 6-0), Sophia Tounge (6-1, 6-2) and Sydney Roux (6-0, 6-0) all won their singles. Audrey Payer and Audrey Cote (6-2, 6-0), Ailey Mann and Ava Gendron (6-0, 6-0) also won their doubles.

They fell to Thornton Academy in a tough 3-2 loss on Friday, May 12. Guinard won first singles while Mann and Sophia Aiken went into three sets for a tiebreaker and won the match.

They host South Portland on Tuesday, May 16 and travel to Windham on Thursday, May 18.

Boys Track & Field

The team traveled to Fitzpatrick Stadium for a meet against TA, Portland, and Scarborough on Thursday, May 11. Tucker Walker earned first in discus and second in shot put. Mason Van Giesen took first in a lengthy pole vault event, Landon Gosling took third. Isaac Colon took first in the 600m racewalk.

Nick Farrington took second in the Javelin. Carter Buswell took third in the 200m. Richard Simpson took third in the 400. Tyler LeBeuf took third in the 300m hurdles. The Spartans are 4-4 on the season.

Girls Track & Field

The girls traveled to Fitzpatrick Stadium Thursday, May 11 for a meet against Portland, TA and Scarborough.

Freshman Annalise Stimmell took first in the 800m race and fourth in the 3200m. Senior Kora Eckelman took second in discus while Genevieve Jean-Paul took fourth in the same event. Jean-Paul also took 3rd in shot put, with Eckelman close behind in fourth. Freshman Mackenzie Taylor took 5th in the 100m.

“There have been many great performances by our athletes,” said Anna Lane, assistant coach. “Coach Smith and I are extremely proud of their perseverance. This season has been tough as we are low in numbers, but the amount of dedication these girls show could be pitted against any team.”
