Varsity Sports Recap: Sept. 11-16

Another week of varsity sports is complete – here’s how our Spartans fared:

The Spartans hosted Portland on Thursday, Sept. 14, falling to the Bulldogs 4-0. Sanford’s defense played well, causing the Portland offense to be offsides 11 times. Beckett Barlow made 16 saves for Sanford.

“That was a very good Portland team and the boys played one of their best games despite the score,” said Coach Puffer.

The Spartans travel to Scarborough on Tuesday, Sept. 19 and travel to Bonny Eagle on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Spartans hosted Marshwood on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at home in an exciting match, with Sanford coming out on top 2-1. Hailey Tarbox put the Spartans up early in the first half with a laser to the top right-hand corner of the net. Marshwood tied it up just before halftime and, despite a hard second-half push by the Hawks, Tarbox sealed the game with her second goal of the night off a corner kick halfway through the second half of the game. Sophie Olivo made seven saves in the net.

The 3-0 squad travels to Deering on Wednesday, Sept. 20, and to Cheverus on Friday, Sept. 22.

The Spartans were back in action this week as they traveled to South Portland/Westbrook on Wednesday, Sept. 13, defeating the Co-op 6-3. Sadie Sevigny and Lili Lam each tallied 2 goals, Audrey Payeur added 3 assists, and Natalie Payeur and Zoey McCann each added a goal apiece.

“We came out a little slowly after a long stretch between games,” said Coach Kane. “But once our offense got rolling, we did a great job of scoring and of improving other areas of play.”

The 2-0 squad hosts Biddeford on Thursday, Sept. 21 and Falmouth on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Spartans defeated South Portland 31-20 on Friday, Sept. 15 in a hard-fought battle.  Jordan Bissonnette rushed for 210 yards and scored a touchdown.  Rhylen Avery scored 3 touchdowns on 6 carries for 135 yards.  Carter Mills also added another score and rushed for 38 yards.

Makai Bougie and Cam Suhy had standout defensive efforts along with Tucker Walker, Nick Farrington, Carter Buswell and Scottie Robitaille.

The Spartans travel to Marshwood this Friday, Sept. 22 for a 6 p.m. battle with the Hawks.

Golf traveled to Massabesic on Tuesday, Sept. 12, defeating the Mustangs 9-4. Ayden Lockard paced the Spartans with 46. Zachary Parison and Noah Corliss also showed strong performances.

They traveled to Kennebunk on Thursday, Sept. 14, falling to the Rams 10-3. Brayden Baron and Parison won their head-to-head rounds.

The 2-3 Spartans face Noble on Tuesday, Sept. 19 and Marshwood on Thursday, Sept. 11

Volleyball faced Bonny Eagle on Thursday, Sept. 14, falling to the Scots 3-1. Samone Gallagher led the team in kills and blocks. Claire Odette and Leah Soucy provided outstanding defense.

“Bonny Eagle was a scrappy team similar to us,” said Coach Hill. “Rallies were long and exciting. Unfortunately, one team had to fall short.”

The team travels to Portland on Tuesday, Sept. 19 and hosts Scarborough on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Cross Country (XC) held their Senior Recognition Meet at home on Monday, Sept. 11 against Gorham, Deering and Kennebunk, with the Spartans boys coming in second and Spartan girls coming in third. Gregg Waterman closed the gap on front-runner Isaac Pelletier to significantly help the boys score.

“The boys made tremendous strides in pushing toward their goal of qualifying for the state championship,” Coach Smith said. “They pushed past Kennebunk, a team that beat us at the preseason relays and they were very close to beating a strong Gorham team.”

Caylee Dubois shaved two minutes off of her personal best in the girls’ race, side by side with newcomer Eliza Cyr.

“The girls were able to score as a team for the first time in two years, and are making their mark as we push through the season,” Smith added.

The XC Varsity Invitational at Narragansett School was canceled due to weather. They will travel to Windham High School on Friday, Sept. 22, and head to Manchester, NH the following day for another Varsity Invitational.
