Varsity Sports Recap: Oct. 16-21

Another week of varsity sports is complete – here’s how our Spartans fared:

The Spartans play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Falmouth, falling 3-0. Sanford had 5 shots on goal and Beckett Barlow finished the game with 13 saves.

The Spartans did not make it to playoffs this season.

The team hosts their final game of the regular season – and Senior Recognition Night – on Monday, Oct. 16 against Portland, defeating the Bull Dogs 2-1. Hailey Tarbox scored off an assist by Annalise Stimmell in the first half. Senior defender Shelby McLeod then scored the second goal in the second half unassisted with a shot from 25 yards out. Sophie Olivo had 5 saves in net for Sanford.

They then defeated Bonny Eagle 4-1 at home in playoffs on Friday, Oct. 20. Ailey Mann started the night off with a header off a corner kick by Tarbox. Tarbox then scored to make it 2-0. Julissa McBarron scored minutes into the second half and Mann scored her second goal to finish it 4-1. 

They travel to Gorham in the second round of playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The team’s final regular-season game was at home on Wednesday, Oct. 17 (Senior Recognition Game) against Thornton Academy. The Spartans prevailed 2-0 over the Trojans, dominating 16 shots to TA’s one. Audrey Payeur and Paige Sevigny scored for Sanford. Ellie Davis had one assist.

Sanford (7th seed) went on to defeat Windham (10th seed) 6-1 in a home playoff game on Friday, Oct. 20. Sanford had 22 shots on goal compared to Windham’s 6. Payeur had 2 goals and 2 assists. Davis and Miah Mondor each had 1 goal and 1 assist. Zoe McCann and Emma Riche each added a goal while Paige Sevigny added an assist.

They travel to Gorham for the second round of playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The Spartans traveled to Oxford Hills on Friday, Oct. 20, falling 26-7. Jordan Bissonnette prevented a shutout by rumbling in from 30 yards for Sanford with 7:46 to play. Matty Hebert added the extra point.

They host Noble for Senior Recognition Night on Friday, Oct. 27.

The team played in their final regular-season match on Monday, Oct. 16 at Thornton Academy, where they defeated the Trojans 3-0.

Samone Gallagher dominated the court with 11 kills, 15 blocks, 7 digs, 3 assists, and 4 service aces. Leah Soucy locked down the back row with 13 digs, 2 assists, and 6 service aces. Ellery Genest did a great job distributing the ball leading the team with 13 assists as well as adding on 4 digs, 6 service aces, and 1 block. Ashley Elias added on 5 kills for the Spartans and Claire Odette had solid 5 kills, 5 digs, and 5 service aces to seal the game for the Spartans.

The Spartans (fifth-seeded) went on to defeat 12th-seeded South Portland High School 3-0 on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. at Partners Bank Gymnasium.

However, they fell to fourth-seeded Deering in a tough competition. Congratulations to volleyball on a fantastic season.

Sanford competed in the Class A South Regional Championships on Saturday, Oct. 21. The boys placed 11th out of 17 teams. Isaac Pelletier qualified for the State Meet individually with a 26th-place finish. Annalise Stimmell, a dual-sport athlete, was only a few places from qualification.

“Both teams ran well in the toughest league in the state,” said Coach Smith. “Having a freshman like Isaac qualify was an incredible accomplishment to watch. The girls ran well as individuals. It was a joy to see both teams come together a run great races to finish off their seasons.”

Pelletier will run on Oct. 28 in Belfast at the Class A State Championship
